"Ripple Effect #1" - $50, 7"x5", acrylic on canvas panel, c)2010 valerie@berkelydesign.com
For summer swimming, it takes me a LONG time to get all the way into the water at Lake Superior. So I spend a long time looking down at the rocks while trying to keep my footing. The glimmer of color refracted through the gentle ripples of water inspired me to abstract the imagery in a painting by memory.
With transparent acrylic, I dabbed colors randomly using a medium size filbert brush. I let the brush shape dictate the rock shapes, allowing texture to happen accidently. When dry, I next used a small pointed brush with transparent payne's grey to outline some of the rocks to indicate depth. When that was dry, I used transparent white and lavender as a glaze to squiggle the ripples.
Now you can understand why I love the fast-drying transparent acrylic paints! I'm tempted to try this technique again. So stay tuned...

I hear music and lapping waves--I hear Lake Superior--when I see this.
