Today I Learned: Purple underpainting.

"Shore Line #20 - Purple Haze", 10"x8", acrylic on canvas panel, c)2010 valerie@berkelydesign.com

This painting started out as a rough underpainting in purple with white to establish a basic map indicating the darks and the lights.  So many of my lake paintings use a lot of blue, cobalt and ultramarine, because of all the water and sky as subjects.  So this was a fun challenge.  I knew that purple works well under greens.  Usually, to balance a predominantly blue color scheme, I would underpaint in warmer colors such as sienna or orange.  So I was pleased to find that purple works well under blues to depict a cooler temperature.

As the day nears for the opening of my exhibit "Where We Live", I will upload a series of previous miniature paintings to keep you posted, entertained, and learning.  Stay tuned...
